FPL Defensive Contributions Explained: How to Earn 2 Extra Points Every Match
FPL Defensive Contributions Explained: How to Earn 2 Extra Points Every Match
TL;DR — Defensive contributions are a new FPL scoring rule introduced for 2025/26. Defenders who reach 10 combined clearances, blocks, interceptions, and tackles (CBIT) in a match earn 2 extra FPL points. Midfielders and forwards need 12 combined CBIRT (which also counts ball recoveries). It's capped at 2 points per match — but over a season, it adds up to a significant edge if you pick the right players. Track defensive contributions live on LiveFPL →
What Are Defensive Contributions in FPL?
Defensive contributions are a brand-new scoring category added to Fantasy Premier League for the 2025/26 season. For the first time, players can earn 2 direct FPL points for reaching a threshold of defensive actions during a single match.
This is separate from bonus points. It's a standalone scoring event, just like a goal, assist, or clean sheet. If your defender hits 10 defensive actions in a match, those 2 points appear on their scorecard alongside everything else.
The rule was introduced to better recognise the work of centre-backs and defensive midfielders — players who've historically been undervalued in FPL because their contributions didn't translate into points.
How It Works: The Thresholds
Defenders — 10 CBIT
Defenders need 10 combined clearances, blocks, interceptions, and tackles in a single match to earn 2 points.
- C — Clearances (heading or kicking the ball away from danger)
- B — Blocks (getting in the way of a shot or pass)
- I — Interceptions (reading the play and cutting out a pass)
- T — Tackles (winning the ball from an opponent)
Only these four actions count for defenders. Ball recoveries don't count towards their threshold.
Midfielders & Forwards — 12 CBIRT
Midfielders and forwards need a higher threshold of 12 combined defensive actions, but they get an extra action type counted:
- C — Clearances
- B — Blocks
- I — Interceptions
- T — Tackles
- R — Ball recoveries (being first to a loose ball, regaining possession)
Ball recoveries are particularly valuable for pressing midfielders and defensive midfielders who win the ball back high up the pitch. Because this extra action type gives them more opportunities to accumulate stats, their threshold is higher (12 instead of 10).
The Cap: 2 Points Maximum
Defensive contribution points are capped at 2 per match. If James Tarkowski makes 20 CBIT in a game, he still earns just 2 points — not 4. However, those extra defensive actions still feed into the Bonus Points System (BPS), so going above the threshold can still help earn bonus.
How Much Are Defensive Contributions Worth Over a Season?
The impact is bigger than most managers realise. Consider a centre-back who hits the 10 CBIT threshold in 60-70% of their matches (which the top performers do):
| Scenario | Matches Hitting Threshold | Extra Points |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional | 10 matches | 20 points |
| Consistent | 20 matches | 40 points |
| Elite | 25+ matches | 50+ points |
For context, 40 extra points across a season is equivalent to roughly 6-7 extra goals from a forward in pure FPL value. That's a massive boost for defenders priced at £4.0-5.5m.
Who Benefits Most?
Centre-Backs in Teams That Defend Deep
The biggest winners are centre-backs on teams that face lots of pressure. More shots faced means more clearances and blocks. More attacks to deal with means more interceptions and tackles.
This is slightly counterintuitive — you might expect the best defenders to be on the best teams. But for defensive contributions, it's the defenders who are busiest that earn the most. A centre-back at a mid-table club facing 12-15 shots per game will consistently hit the threshold, even without keeping a clean sheet.
Top performers this season:
| Player | Club | Price | DefCon Points (GW29) | Hit Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marcos Senesi | Bournemouth | £5.0m | 42 pts | ~80% |
| James Tarkowski | Everton | £5.4m | 36 pts | ~70% |
| Joachim Andersen | Fulham | £4.5m | 32 pts | ~65% |
| James Hill | Bournemouth | £4.1m | 16 pts (11 apps) | ~73% |
Defensive Midfielders
The CBIRT rule means pressing midfielders who win second balls and make recovery runs can rack up 12 defensive actions. Players like Moises Caicedo and Granit Xhaka — who wouldn't traditionally be FPL picks — now offer genuine value through defensive contributions on top of any attacking output.
Top midfielders this season:
| Player | Club | Price | DefCon Points (GW29) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elliot Anderson | Forest | £5.0m | 42 pts |
| Moises Caicedo | Chelsea | £6.1m | — |
| Granit Xhaka | Sunderland | £5.2m | — |
| Josh Cullen | Burnley | £5.0m | — |
Forwards (Rare but Possible)
Forwards can also earn defensive contribution points, but it's uncommon. They need 12 CBIRT, and most forwards don't make enough defensive actions to hit that threshold. When it happens, it's typically hard-pressing centre-forwards in teams that defend from the front.
Defensive Contributions vs Clean Sheets
These are completely independent scoring events. A defender can earn 2 points from defensive contributions whether their team keeps a clean sheet or concedes five goals.
This changes how you should think about budget defenders. Previously, a £4.5m centre-back on a leaky team was almost useless — no clean sheets meant minimal returns. Now, that same defender can earn 2 points from CBIT every other match, giving them a meaningful scoring floor even when their team gets beaten.
| Scenario | Clean Sheet Points | DefCon Points | Total Defensive Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean sheet + hits threshold | 4 | 2 | 6 |
| Clean sheet + misses threshold | 4 | 0 | 4 |
| No clean sheet + hits threshold | 0 | 2 | 2 |
| No clean sheet + misses threshold | 0 | 0 | 0 |
The third row is the game-changer. Defenders on weaker teams now have a reliable way to return points.
Defensive Contributions and BPS
Defensive contributions points and bonus points are separate scoring categories, but the underlying actions feed into both systems.
Every clearance, block, interception, and tackle that counts towards the CBIT threshold also earns +2 BPS each in the Bonus Points System. So a centre-back who hits 10 CBIT earns:
- 2 FPL points from defensive contributions
- 20+ BPS from individual actions feeding the bonus calculation
This means busy defenders often earn defensive contribution points AND bonus points in the same match. That's why you'll regularly see centre-backs returning 8-11 points in a clean sheet match: 4 (clean sheet) + 2 (defensive contributions) + 3 (bonus) + appearance points.
How to Pick Defenders Using Defensive Contribution Data
1. Look at Hit Rate, Not Just Total Points
A defender who hits the threshold in 75% of starts is more reliable than one who occasionally has a monster game. Consistency is what makes defensive contributions valuable — they give you a predictable 2-point floor on top of everything else.
2. Budget Defenders Benefit Most
The biggest edge comes from the £4.0-5.5m price range. At this price, you're not paying for attacking returns — you're paying for minutes. Defensive contributions turn nailed-on budget centre-backs into genuine point scorers. James Hill at £4.1m with a 73% hit rate is the perfect example.
3. Pair With Fixture Difficulty
CBIT stats spike against attacking-heavy opponents. A centre-back facing Liverpool or Man City will face more shots and crosses than one facing a team that barely attacks. Use fixture difficulty to identify weeks where your defenders are likely to hit the threshold — even if a clean sheet is unlikely.
4. Don't Ignore Midfielders
Defensive midfielders at £5.0-6.0m who consistently hit 12 CBIRT offer something unique: defensive contribution points PLUS potential attacking returns. A midfielder who earns 2 defensive points and occasionally chips in a goal or assist is a very efficient FPL asset.
